Although the title page indicates that this is the first American edition, an English translation by Granville Sharp Pattison (1791-1851) had been published at Washington, D.C. in 1835. The present translation was made from the French edition of 1839 and has here been translated by Peter S. Townsend (fl. 1840), physician to the Seamen's Retreat on Staten Island. The project was supervised by Mott (see No. 1417) who added supplementary material as necessary to insure that the treatise reflected the most recent developments in operative surgery when it was published. Included in the Preface is the letter Mott sent to Velpeau seeking authority to translate the book as well as Velpeau's gracious reply granting permission. Plate 21 which depicts the instruments used in and the operation of lateral lithotomy is wanting in the University of Iowa Libraries' atlas.
