Velpeau was considered the leading French surgeon of his day. He completed two years of medical study at Tours where he served for a time as a health officer before going to Paris to complete his medical degree. He was an accomplished teacher and surgeon and a leading member of the Paris Faculté de Médecine. Velpeau was one of the first to attack aneurysms of the great vessels, wrote one of the first works on diseases of the female breast, and made many contributions to the medical literature. This first edition of his work on surgical anatomy contains fourteen colored lithographic plates of much beauty and detail.
