Meigs' translation was very well received in the United States and new editions were issued at regular intervals. This fourth American edition has been edited by William Byrd Page (1817-1877), lecturer on obstetrics in the Philadelphia Medical Institute. Taken from the latest French edition, this American edition incorporates its many additions and changes. Most significant are a lengthy historical introduction, numerous textual illustrations, and twelve plates.
