Velpeau was no less famous as a gynecologist and obstetrician than as one of the leading surgeons of his day. One of his earliest works, this treatise was written from his lecture notes and was intended primarily for the use of students. The book opens with an extensive introductory section on the anatomy and physiology of the female genitalia. Velpeau continues with a comprehensive discussion of normal and abnormal gestation and delivery. His ingenuity and boldness in handling abnormal fetal presentations, in a time when modern day prenatal diagnostic procedures were not available, is especially admirable.
