Zollickoffer, a physician and botanist, was lecturer on medical botany, materia medica, and therapeutics at the University of Maryland. One of the first individuals in this country to write a materia medica, first published in 1819, his purpose was to acquaint American physicians with the medicinal plants of their own country. He follows the classification used by John Murray (see No. 1333) and includes the opinions and observations of his colleagues and peers.
