Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1333

JOHN MURRAY (1778-1820) A system of materia medica and pharmacy. Dobson 1815 Vol. I: vi [2] 399 pp.; Vol. II: iv, 384 pp. 21.6 cm.

Murray, a Scottish physician and chemist, taught chemistry, physics, pharmacy, and materia medica in London and Edinburgh. His major works were in these fields, and the present book is a more complete and comprehensive volume intended to replace an earlier work, Elements of materia medica and pharmacy (1804). The book was first published in London in 1810 and was designed as a textbook to accompany his lectures. In this first American edition, Nathaniel Chapman (see No. 1360), noted professor of materia medica at the University of Pennsylvania, adapted it as a textbook for his lectures and added his notes throughout the text.
