Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1498

CHARLES ASTON KEY (1793-1849) Report of primary syphilitic cases. A. Waldie 1840 pp. [239]-261. 21.7 cm.

Key was a pupil, disciple, and staunch supporter of Cooper (see No. 1224 ff.). He followed Cooper as surgeon at Guy's Hospital and was appointed professor of surgery when Guy's began its own medical school in 1825. In 1822 he successfully ligated the external iliac artery for femoral aneurysm and a year later the subclavian artery for aneurysm at the axilla. Key was the first surgeon at Guy's to use anesthesia and he also introduced improvements in lithotomy and in the operation for hernia. In the present paper Key discusses his experiences and observations in treating primary syphilis, chiefly with mercurial remedies. The paper first appeared in the October 1839 issue of Guy's Hospital reports and has here been included in Medical and surgical monographs.
