Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1495

THOMAS BELL (1792-1880) The anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the teeth. Carey, Lea & Blanchard 1837 3rd American ed. xiii, 351 pp., 11 plates. 22.1 cm.

Guy's was the first hospital in London to appoint a dental surgeon and Bell was the second dentist to hold that office. A fellow of the Royal Society and member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Bell's love of dentistry had been inspired by his predecessor Fox (see No. 1314). Bell was keenly interested in natural history, was an excellent comparative anatomist, and in 1836 was made professor of zoology in King's College, London. Bell's lectures on dentistry were first published at London in 1827 and in the United States in 1831. A popular text on the subject, Bell's work set forth many original deductions and observations which are still valid today.
