For more information on this author or work, see number: 1484

In the Preface Civiale remarks that he had written extensively on nearly all aspects of urinary calculi. However, he had not thoroughly investigated the therapeutic remedies that could be applied in cases where surgical removal of the calculi was not warranted, and that is the subject of this publication. The book is a translation of Civiale's Du traitement médical et préservatif de la pierre et de la gravelle published at Paris in 1840 and also translated into German the same year. It is here translated by Henry H. Smith (1815-1890), professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and later surgeon general of Pennsylvania during the Civil War.
