As Bell approached the later years of his life, he decided to leave London and in 1836 returned to Edinburgh where he assumed the chair of surgery. He also remained active as an author and gave special attention to the preparation of his lectures. This work was first published at Edinburgh in 1838 and consists of many of the lectures he delivered on the principles and practice of surgery.
