Cloquet was the younger brother of Hippolyte (see No. 1430). Cloquet began publishing this magnificent atlas in 1821 after being named a member of the Académie Royal de Médecine. He was, at the time, second surgeon at the Hôpital Saint Louis, prosector for the Faculté de Médecine of Paris, and professor of anatomy, physiology and surgery. One of the early French anatomical works with lithographed plates, it was edited and published by Charles Philibert de Lasteyrie (1759-1849). The first four volumes of the set are devoted to osteology, myology, neurology, and angiology, respectively. The final volume covers both spanchnology and embryology. In this set, the index has been bound at the beginning of Volume I.
