Cloquet was one of the leading anatomists of western Europe in the first half of the nineteenth century and was a pioneer in rhinology as well. This detailed text of anatomy, prepared for the Faculté de Médecine of Paris, became the standard French text of anatomy and went through six editions. The fourth edition was translated into English by Robert Knox (1791-1862), the Scottish anatomist who was involved with the resurrectionists Burke and Hare. Cloquet was also well known for his five volume atlas Planches d'anatomie descriptive which was prepared some years later to illustrate the text. His younger brother, Jules (see No. 1469 ff.), and eldest son, André Ernest (1818-1856), were also accomplished anatomists.
