According to the Advertisement, this first American edition is unaltered except for the notes and comments of Dorsey (see No. 1372), the editor. Cooper first published the book in London only a year earlier, selecting an alphabetical format so that the book would be readily portable and could be easily used by naval and military surgeons. The dictionary became Cooper's most well-known work, went through numerous editions, and was translated into French, German, and Italian. Many of the entries were lengthy and Cooper took special care to refer to other works which could provide additional information on a particular topic.
