JOHN SYNG DORSEY (1783-1818) Elements of surgery; for the use of students. Edward Parker 1813 Vol. I: vii, 407 pp.; Vol. II: vii, 388 pp., illus. 21.5 cm.
Dorsey was only nineteen when he received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and his early start allowed him to crowd a busy career into a brief but fruitful thirty-five years. He was the first American surgeon to perform a successful ligation of the external iliac artery. While professor of materia medica at his alma mater, Dorsey published this very successful textbook of surgery for which he prepared many of the illustrations.
