Like his celebrated father, Eduard (see No. 1044), Gerard was an anatomist and physician whose interests lay in the depiction and preservation of pathological specimens. He edited the final two volumes of his father's Museum anatomicum (see No. 1049) and later produced the work for which he is best known, Tabulae craniorum diversarum nationum (1838-1843), a reproduction of skulls of various nationalities. Tabulae anatomicae is an atlas of pathological anatomy depicting the thoracic and abdominal viscera. The copperplates were drawn by the author and engraved by Muys.
