The present work was published by request of the University curators and the Leiden city council to describe the contents of the Leiden Museum. Sandifort began Volume I with a history of the anatomists at the University starting with Gerard Bontius (1538-1599) and including such well known individuals as Pauw, Rau, and the Albinus brothers. At the end of the first volume are life-size plates depicting side and front views of the skulls of nine males and females. The plates in Volume II are devoted chiefly to bone pathology but also include some of developmental defects. The drawings were again made by Delfos and the plates were engraved by Muys and Pieter de Mare (1757-1796). The author's son Gerard (see No. 1347) edited the final two volumes of the set. Volume III, with no illustrations, appeared in 1827 and Volume IV, with seventy copperplates, was published in 1835. The University of Iowa Libraries' set is lacking Volumes III and IV.
