Bateman and Willan worked so closely together that it is difficult, if not impossible, to identify correctly their individual scientific accomplishments. Bateman became, after Willan's death, the most noted dermatologist in London, and his practice and writings became largely dermatological. In addition to completing Willan's On cutaneous diseases (see No. 1155), Bateman produced this magnificent atlas, which includes Willan's previously unpublished engravings. This compilation of seventy-two colored plates and accompanying description is the first dermatological atlas.
