THOMAS BATEMAN (1778-1821) A practical synopsis of cutaneous diseases. Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown 1814 3rd ed. xxiv, 344 pp., 1 col. plate (front.). 20.6 cm.
Like Robert Willan (see No. 1155), his celebrated teacher and collaborator, Bateman was born in Yorkshire and received his medical degree from Edinburgh. Willan is considered the founder of modern dermatology, and his classification scheme and nomenclature system for skin diseases are still in use today. However, his greatest work, On cutaneous diseases (see No. 1155), remained unfinished at his death. Bateman completed Willan's work with the present book in 1813. Based on Willan's classification of skin diseases, the work became extremely popular, went through many editions, and was widely translated.
