Until the first U.S. pharmacopoeia appeared in 1820 (see No. 1879), American physicians were forced to rely on a variety of drug compendia, most of which were limited in scope or authority. This work on surgical therapeutics was written by James Wilson, Surgeon at Guy's Hospital, and was introduced into the United States after having gone through three British editions.
