In the Introduction, Carpue states that "In the year 1817, wishing to know the state of surgery at Paris, I made a journey to that city. . . ." (p. [1]). He goes on to recount his meeting with Pierre François Percy (1754-1825) and Joseph Souberbielle (1754-1846) and describes his demonstrations of the high operation for the stone on both a living subject and male and female cadavers. The remainder of the book is a history of lithotomy by both the perineal and suprapubic approaches and includes the techniques of Franco, Frère Jacques, Méry, Douglas, Cheselden, Frère Côme, Rousset, Proby, Pye, and Middleton. An appendix contains French extracts from the writings of Pierre Franco (see No. 257) on lithotomy. Copy 2 of this work was specially bound for the Duke of York, younger brother of the future King George IV. It is a presentation copy to the Duke, signed by Carpue. The folding frontispiece in this copy has been hand-colored.
