Franco, an itinerant lithotomist, was one of the most skilled and original surgeons of the sixteenth century. He published his most famous work, Traité des hernies, at Lyons in 1561. Franco adhered to Galenic precepts and among the subjects he dealt with were bladder stone, venereal disease, obstetrics, inflammation, wounds, and eye diseases. This modern edition of Franco's work has been edited by the noted French surgeon and medical historian, Jules Édouard Nicaise. It includes a short biography of Franco, a history of the French College of Surgery, and a bibliography of the surgical literature of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
