Hildenbrand studied medicine under Maximilian Stoll (see No. 1040) at Vienna where he later was appointed professor of medicine. This classic treatise on typhus was widely translated in numerous editions. Hildenbrand's lucid description of the disease was so widely read that typhus is sometimes referred to in the French literature as Hildenbrand's Disease.
