Stoll was a member of the influential Viennese School which, during his lifetime, became one of the focal points of European medical inquiry. He is generally regarded as a systematist relying heavily on the work of Sydenham. Stoll was one of the few physicians of the Viennese School who supported Auenbrugger's views on percussion. In this treatise on fevers he refers favorably to the practice and, in all probability, it was here that the translator, Corvisart, became acquainted with the subject. This prompted him to translate also Auenbrugger's classic work (see No. 954), which subsequently led to the general acceptance of percussion as a diagnostic practice.
