America's first medical historian and a practitioner of the first rank, Thacher is best known for his two-volume American medical biography (1828) and for his medical journal covering the American Revolution in which he gives a graphic eyewitness account of the struggle. The popular American new dispensatory, Thacher's first work, is adopted from the Pharmacopoeia of the Massachusetts Medical Society (see No. 1704) which was published previously by the Massachusetts Medical Society.
