This translation was made by Caldwell (see No. 1270) because he felt that previous translations were inadequate and that it was time that such an important book be prepared for an American audience. Caldwell made his translation from Institutiones physiologicae (see No. 1113) and this is the first translation to be printed in the United States. Caldwell has also included an appendix in which he reviews the development of animal electricity.
