JOHANN FRIEDRICH BLUMENBACH (1752-1840) Institutiones physiologicae. Apud Jo. Christ. Dieterich 1786 xvi, 511 pp., 4 plates. 19.1 cm.
Physician, physiologist, historian, and bibliographer, Blumenbach is generally regarded as the founder of scientific anthropology. His classification of the sub-divisions of the human race, which forms the latter part of this work, was the first to utilize facial configuration as well as skin color, and his system has survived to the present with but little modification.
