It is quite possible that Buchan may have had assistance from William Smellie (1740-1795) in the preparation of Domestic medicine. Robert Kerr (1755-1813)--physician, scientific writer, translator, and Smellie's biographer--believed that Smellie edited and partially rewrote Buchan's manuscript. Smellie was an Edinburgh printer who possessed extensive medical knowledge and was widely read in philosophy and the natural sciences. The first edition of the book bore Smellie's imprint.
