CHARLES WHITE (1728-1813) An inquiry into the nature and cause of that swelling, in one or both of the lower extremities, which sometimes happens to lying-in women. Printed by W. Eyres, for C. Dilly 1784 87 pp., 3 fold. plates. 20.6 cm.

For more information on this author or work, see number: 981

A pioneer in aseptic midwifery, this work is White's other major contribution to obstetrics. In this short tract, he gave the first clinical description of phlegmasia alba dolens (thrombophlebitis of the lower extremities), as clinically accurate as any to be found in a modern text. This particular copy has an interesting provenance in that it contains the bookplate of Dr. Irving S. Cutter, at one time dean of Northwestern Medical School, and an inscription by Dr. William H. Welch, famous pathologist and bacteriologist at Johns Hopkins University, to whom the book was presented by Dr. Cutter in 1930.

Cited references: Cushing W163 (1801 ed., Vol. II only); Garrison-Morton 6271; Waller 10269
