Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 977

JOHANN GEORG RITTER VON ZIMMERMANN (1728-1795) Von der Ruhr unter dem Volke im Jahr 1765. Füesslin 1767 xii, 544 pp. 17.3 cm.

Zimmermann was born in Brugg, Switzerland, and studied medicine at Göttingen under the tutelage of Albrecht von Haller, in whose home he lived. Following graduation in 1751, he visited Amsterdam, Leiden, and Paris, after which he practiced in Bern for a year and was then appointed city physician in his native city. In 1768 he became court physician to the Duke of York in Hannover. He was one of the most popular and successful physicians of his time and was also a prolific writer. His books were reprinted many times and were translated into English and the major languages of western Europe. The present work contains the first description of bacillary dysentery, and it remained an authority on the disease for several decades after its publication.
