Among his many accomplishments, Hunter was responsible for the establishment of some of the greatest medical museums in Europe, and the Hunterian museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of England was based on his own private collection. Unfortunately, much of the collection was destroyed during an air raid in 1941. Hunter's works were edited by Sir James Frederick Palmer (1804-1871), an English physician who later became mayor of Melbourne, Australia. Volume I includes a lengthy biography of Hunter by Drewry Ottley. An atlas containing sixty-one plates, normally included with the set, is not present.
