WILLIAM HIRD (1728-1782) Remarks upon pestilence and pestilential diseases. Printed for W. Innys and J. Richardson 1753 viii, 96 pp. 22.5 cm.
Hird was physician to Leeds Infirmary and is often remembered for his biographical tribute to the noted English physician, John Fothergill (see No. 914 ff.). The present essay was written as the result of a serious epidemic that killed many cattle in the Leeds region and in other parts of England. Hird discusses the disease at length and includes the results of his postmortem examination of a cow. He also considers other epidemic diseases, such as the plague, and gives suggestions for their prevention and cure.
