The Leyden jar became widely available in the mid-eighteenth century, and Caldani used it frequently for his studies of animal tissues. Although he was not successful in his attempts to stimulate the heart, he obtained a series of strong contractions in skeletal muscles with sparks from the jar. He first published this text on physiology in 1773 and prepared this revised edition five years later.
