Johann Gottlieb Schäffer was a German physician and naturalist; he worked first as a pharmacist in Schmolln, before obtaining his license to practice as a physician in 1745. This is one of the earliest German treatises on medical electricity. The frontispiece shows a patient seated on a bed connected to a cylindrical glass electrostatic generator and three Leyden jars.
