CHARLES BONNET (1720-1793) Considérations sur les corps organisés. Chez Marc-Michel Rey 1762 Vol. I: xlii [2] 274 pp.; Vol. II: xx, 328 pp. 20.3 cm.
It was Bonnet, a Swiss naturalist and philosopher, who first clearly worked out the theory of preformation of the embryo, or "incapsulation" (emboîtement), and in this he was supported by both Haller and Spallanzani. Parthenogenesis was widely accepted by philosophers and naturalists until the beginning of the twentieth century.
