Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 946.5

19 cm.

Pallucci here explains the surgical techniques he used for removal of the stone [kidney/gall] and amputation of the breast – two fairly horrific operations for the time. The five plates all relate to lithotomy and are extremely well explained at the end of the volume. The first two show surgical instruments, the third more instruments together with five successfully removed stones, the fourth an anatomical cross-section showing the position of stones, and the fifth three figures showing the removal of a stone from the end of a penis, one figure of a severely lacerated penis, and another of a knife used in amputations of the breast. The book itself is full of case histories and in most instances the explanation of the plates refers to specific cases within the text.
