Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 932

CAYETANO CABRERA Y QUINTERO (d. 1775) Escudo de armas de Mexico. Impresso par la viuda de d. J. B. de Hogal 1746 17, 522 [24] pp., front., illus. 28.7 cm.

This beautifully printed work is among the relatively few eighteenth-century medical publications of Mexico. It describes the epidemic of "Matlazahuatl" (cholera) which swept that country in 1736-1737 killing forty thousand persons in Mexico City alone. In addition to the descriptions of symptoms and remedies, a recounting is given of the intervention of Our Lady of Guadalupe who, because of her act, was made Patron Saint of Mexico. The book also contains a wealth of material on local history including descriptions of the churches, local Indian tribes, religion, law, and the life of the capital.

Gift of John Martin, M.D.
