Pott indicates that this second edition "is designed as a supplement to one published a few years ago; one of the objections to which was, that it was defective in matter, and ought to have comprehended the false herniae. . . ." (p. v). The first edition, Practical remarks on the hydrocele or watry rupture, and some other diseases of the testicle, its coats, and vessels, was published in London in 1762. Pott describes his various methods of treatment for the hydrocele as well as the therapies he employed for other diseases of the testicle. He includes numerous case histories with clinical findings in a wide variety of testicular pathology including malignant tumors.
