For more information on this author or work, see number: 925

Lewis' New dispensatory has a long, complex, and interesting bibliographical history which can be traced from John Quincy's Compleat English dispensatory (see No. 712) to the first British pharmacopoeia in 1864. The present work is a vital link in that history, spanning the period from 1786 to 1801. The first few editions of the Edinburgh new dispensatory were edited by Andrew Duncan, Sr. and the remainder by John Rotheram (1751-1804), the editor of this edition. The work was very popular in Europe as well as in America and was reprinted in this country until 1818.
