The present work resulted from a series of lectures (see No. 904) Cullen gave at Edinburgh. According to the author, "The Lectures on the Materia Medica formerly published in my name, though very incorrect, were so well received by the public, that notwithstanding my endeavours to prevent it, they have been several times reprinted, and even translated into foreign languages" (Preface). At first, Cullen considered revising his Lectures but concluded that it would be best to prepare an entirely new work and this treatise was the result. It, too, enjoyed great success and remained in print until the early nineteenth century.
