Many of Cullen's books resulted from his lectures and the present work falls into that category. Originally printed as a textbook for the use of his students at Edinburgh, the text is essentially in outline form serving to note the key points that Cullen enlarged upon in his lectures. He explains that the book was to be published in three parts: "The first treats of life and health. The second delivers the general doctrine of diseases. The third delivers the general doctrine concerning the means of preventing and curing diseases" (p. 6). This first part was all that was ever published.
