Courcelles was a medical graduate of Leiden where he was a student of Albinus (see No. 829 ff.). He published his medical dissertation on the muscles of the sole of the foot at the time of his graduation in 1739 and it later was incorporated into Albinus' Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis hominis (see No. 831). The present work concentrates on the muscles of the head and face and continues in the fine artistic tradition of Albinus. The introduction and explanation of the plates are in Latin and the text has been translated into Dutch.
