After completing his medical education at Leipzig, Ludwig was appointed to the faculty as professor of medicine in 1740. He subsequently became professor of anatomy and surgery in 1747, of pathology in 1755, and of therapy in 1758. He also served as dean of the medical faculty for a number of years. The present work is a discussion of the physiological changes in the pathology of a wide range of diseases including apoplexy, asthma, cancer, gangrene, and tetanus. It is part of a series of six works on physiology, clinical medicine, surgery, pathology, therapeutics, and forensic medicine, each of which was published separately over a number of years.
