The first edition of Gooch's surgical work (see No. 875) was very successful and it was followed by an expanded two-volume edition in 1766. This book was published later, as an appendix to the second edition. The volume contains surgical as well as medical cases which Gooch had encountered since publication of the earlier editions. He also included some miscellaneous medical correspondence and reports resulting from the response to his earlier books. The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, which Gooch had helped to found, had opened only two years earlier with Gooch as its first consulting surgeon. He dedicated the volume to the hospital board and included an account of the development of the hospital in the foreword.
