Gilchrist, a Scottish physician, spent his entire career in Scotland as a practicing physician, making several contributions to the literature on fevers as well as the present work on sea voyages. First published in 1756, it discusses the merits and benefits of the air at sea, histories of cures resulting from exposure to the sea air, and the proper use of sea voyages for health purposes. The author added an appendix concerning the use of the bath in fevers and a supplement containing additional observations on the use of sea trips for health purposes.
