Professor of medicine, botany, and pharmacology at Frankfurt, Cartheuser wrote widely in the fields of chemistry, botany, pharmacology, pathology, and therapeutics. This work on the fundamentals of the materia medica was first published in 1749 at Frankfurt an der Oder. A popular work, it went through a number of Latin editions (this being the first one published in Venice) and was later translated into French.
