Levret first prepared this work as a text and guide for his students in 1753. A standard text for many years, it covers a wide range of subjects: female pelvic anatomy, conception, normal and pathological conditions, and the stages of gestation, parturition, and post partum period. There is also a section on the care of infants and small children. This edition includes Levret's views on the aphorisms of Mauriceau (see No. 604 ff.). The work is well-illustrated with five folding copperplates depicting the pelvis and uterus during various stages of fetal development.
