Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 858

JACQUES DARAN (1701-1784) Observations chirurgicales, sur les maladies de l'urethre. Chez Debure l'aîné 1748 [2nd ed.]. [4] ccxx, 429 [3] pp., 1 fold. col. plate. 16.6 cm.

Daran was a military surgeon who served with the Austrian army and traveled widely in Italy. He was also affiliated with the Sardinian army at Messina and later practiced in Marseilles. The present work reveals that he had broad experience in the treatment of urogenital diseases. Daran recognized venereal disease as the chief cause of urethral disease and urinary obstruction. He also attributed urinary problems to other conditions such as tumors and post-traumatic scars. He shares his expertise by presenting many detailed case histories. The first edition of this popular and frequently reissued book was published in 1745. This second edition contains a colored plate by Gautier D'Agoty (see No. 940) depicting a dissection of the bladder, testicle, seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and penis with the full length of the urethra exposed.
