First edition of an important work on lithotomy. Morand “one of the most meritorious surgeons of the 18th century” (Hirsch in trans.), was a co-founder of the Academy of Surgery on France, a member of many scientific societies, and a correspondent of most of the important physicians of the time. Morand went to England to watch Cheselden in order to learn the method of haut appareil, or high operation, and this work records his techniques as well as those of Douglas, Franco, and a number of other English surgeons. “In 1727, Morand was the first French surgeon to carry out a planned suprapubic lithotomy. His technique differed somewhat from that of Douglas, and he placed the patient in a head-down position, 150 years before Trendelenburg.” –Murphy, History of Urology.
