Platner, professor of anatomy and surgery at Leipzig from 1724 until his death, was able to affirm the tuberculous nature of hunchback which Hippocrates had suspected and Galen had confirmed. His surgical text, first published in 1745, passed through several editions and was translated into German and Dutch. The six folding plates depict several surgical appliances and instruments.
