The original edition of this work was published at Dublin in April 1744 and within a month it was issued at London (see No. 804). Its popularity was so great that several more editions were printed at both Dublin and London that same year. The use of tar water spread rapidly and Berkeley's work became what would today be considered a best seller. It was quickly translated into several European languages.
